How the roof checker works
1. Find your building
Enter your business postcode and the satellite map takes you to your estate. Pan and zoom until you can see your roof.
2. Click the roof
One click. We pull the modelled geometry for that exact building — roof area, usable area, pitch, orientation and yearly sunshine.
3. See the system that fits
Panels are laid onto your roof on the map, with system size, generation and savings. The full report is emailed to you, free.
Where the numbers come from
The roof geometry — area, segments, pitch, orientation and sunshine hours — comes from Google's Solar API, which models individual UK buildings from aerial imagery. On top of that we apply transparent, UK-wide commercial assumptions:
- Panel module: 450 W commercial modules (output scaled from the imagery model)
- DC to AC: 85% — inverter, wiring and soiling losses
- Electricity rate: 25p/kWh — typical UK commercial rate
- CO₂ factor: 35 tonnes per 110,000 kWh (UK grid)
Treat the result as a well-measured starting point. Rooftop plant, structural condition and your electrical connection can move the final design — that's what the free, no-obligation site survey checks before anyone quotes you.
Updated June 2026 · By Taro Schenker, founder of Business Solar Check. We're independent — we don't install solar. Figures are indicative UK averages; your site survey confirms the numbers for your roof.
Frequently asked questions
How accurate is the roof measurement?+
The tool uses Google's Solar API, which models roof geometry — area, pitch, orientation and shading — from aerial imagery, building by building. It is a strong estimate, not a survey: rooftop plant, skylights and structural limits can reduce what is actually installable, which is exactly what the free site survey confirms.
Is my building covered?+
Most UK commercial buildings are covered in high or medium quality. Some new builds and rural sites are not in the model yet — if yours isn't, the page falls back to a quick calculator where you enter the roof area yourself.
What does it cost, and what's the catch?+
Nothing, and there isn't one. The check and report are free with no obligation. We are independent — we don't install solar. If your roof stacks up and you ask us to, we connect you with a vetted commercial installer for a free site survey; that referral is how we're paid.
Do I need to own the building?+
No, but it changes the route. Owner-occupiers can move straight to a survey. If you lease, you'll need landlord consent — we ask up front so the installer comes prepared for that conversation.
What happens after I get my report?+
Your report is shown on screen and emailed to you. A vetted local installer will then be in touch to arrange a free, no-obligation site survey to confirm the design, the structure and your electrical capacity.
